Layon Gray's
BLACK ANGELS
OVER TUSKEGEE

WINS NAACP AWARD 2009 FOR BEST ENSEMBLE

Black Angels Over Tuskegee written by NAACP award winner Layon Gray is a story told in narrative of six men
embarking upon a journey to become pilots in the United States Army Air  Forces.  This  powerful stage
play, explores their collective struggle with Jim Crow, their intelligence, patriotism, dreams of an inclusive
fair society, and brotherhood. It is a perfect vehicle to entertain, inspire and add perspective to a rarely heard
chapter in American history. Black Angels Over Tuskegee literally goes beyond the headlines of the popular stories
of the Tuskegee Airmen and exposes the men who exhibited the courage to excel, in spite of all the overwhelming odds against them.
" POWERFUL!""A MASTERWORK!" "GENIUS!"
WHAT AUDIENCES ARE SAYING ABOUT THE SHOW
This show was AMAZING. The performers sold their characters with sheer talent, it was a testament
to no-frills art. Layon Gray has a brilliantly imaginative mind.

• Excellent Show. One of the best plays I have ever seen!!

• This performance was outstanding! I highly recommend it and am now a definite fan of Layon Gray. I was so surprised by the texture and the tone of this play. I thought the storytelling would take the typical angle of covering the historical facts, showing the discrimination and the transcendence of the characters. And while it covered those elements, it did so through the lens of each man's humanity. We saw Black men expressing openness and vulnerability, tenderness, love and care. WOW! We are so often bombarded with images of Black men who are portrayed as callus, blinged out, pants sagging playas and pimps. This was truly refreshing to experience a more authentic look into the real lives of Black men. Also, what a bonus to discover that one of the original Tuskegee Airmen was in the audience with us! He got up and said a few words after the performance. You could tell that he, too, was moved and honored by this authentic performance. Thank you, Layon. I look forward to your next production.

• This is a must see! The actors were excellent! There were moments, I felt like I was right there with
them, instead of in the theatre.

• It was a proud moment for my family and to see a production like this, was truly an honor and it indirectly allowed me to pay tribute to my uncle. The writing and cast was fabulous.

• This performance was absolutely amazing! The script was well written and the story was completely engaging. You as the audience member become totally engrossed in the story unfolding and end up completely outside yourself. I highly recommend it and will go again myself!

• What a great play. The actors were sensational. I was filled with pride that the Tuskegee Airmen persevered and made their mark. I also learned about the first black female pilot. Can't wait to see Mr. Gray's next play.

• Fantastic acting, writing & directing Job. I hope this play gets to Broadway!!!! It is moving, and wonderful.......

• Black Angels Over Tuskegee was an incredibly entertaining and educational show. The performances by all the actors was phenomenal, pure talent. One of the best shows I have ever experienced. No high-tech devices, just amazing, emotion-filled acting. I plan to see it at least once more.

• As a special treat, there were two original Tuskegee Airmen attending the play!! Excellent acting. The story is historical and educational.

• The play was very good. I really liked the approach from which the play was centered. It was like being apart of each characters life. I was pleasantly surprised at the historical facts that were integrated into the story.

• one word AMAZING!!!!!!

• Thought the show was much better than many things I have seen in larger theaters such as the Taper or Ahmanson! The night I attended, we were very fortunate, in that there was an actual Tuskegee Airman in attendance. The show is well paced and both entertaining and educational. I would definitely recommend it. This production is worthy of a larger venue and a larger audience.

• This was ABSOLUTELY marvelous... The actors were magnificent and knew how to work the stage. The story was one that needed to be told. You laugh, you cry and you remember what our people had to endure. Makes me proud to be apart of such a strong race of people.

• What a wonderful well written play, the acting was superb! I attended the play with my 87 year old
grandmother who was equally impressed also, she just enjoyed the whole story it brought back some good as well as sad memories for her.

• Man this Layon Gray is awesome he is going to be the next Tyler Perry the acting was great and everyone that went with me loved it.. I hope more people can go see this play so he can get recognize.

• Excellent! Everyone needs to check this play out. No excuses!

• Engaging, great personal story on an amazing historical event in America rarely discussed and cleverly integrating other African American historical facts. Well done.
